Why won't my Sony Ericsson W580i work when I plug it into my computer?

When I first got my phone, all I had to do was plug it in and it would appear on My Computer. All of a sudden, a bubble pops up and says, "One of your USB devices attached on this computers has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."

I clicked on the bubble and did what it told me to, but it still fails to work. I have downloaded the PC Suite and it tells me I need to download the proper drivers. What would be the right thing to do?
