So, my new Blue-ray disc reader won't read .srt files from an USB. It's a Toshiba BDX 1250KE model. It's supposed to read .srt, .sub, .ssa,...

And yeeeaaaaah... You kinda should put the USB there, the port is there to use it. If I weren't clear enough- everything else reads properly from it, only the subtitles won't (even though the user's manual says it's supposed to read them).
