Why does Honda S2000 have bad gas mileage?

I mean it isn't a slow or superbly fast car. S2000 are known for their vtec engine and high rev thrill. The car only gets 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. I think that is pretty bad gas mileage for a car that is really light. It weighs around 2800 pounds. Also the engine is only 2.2 liters. So the car is light and doesn't have a big engine but gas mileage doesnt match up to it. I'm saying this because gas prices rises like every week.

The engine in the S2000 is a high performance design that was aimed at making this sports car competitive with much larger and more powerful cars.

People who purchased this car were well aware of the compromise between displacement and horsepower.output. It produces over 230 horsepower for that 2.2L displacement. And it requires premium gasoline as well.
