Why does Hollywood take an interesting story and turn it into a crappy one

like the movie "21"? So a group of mostly Asian-American students at MIT makes thousands of dollars in Las Vegas with their smarts. This true story subsequently forms the basis for a bestselling novel, one that could certainly make for an interesting film/documentary...

And what does Hollywood do? Takes the story and transforms it into a generic morality-tale with Anglo-Saxons and romance. Seriously, the main character needs Vegas money to pay for Harvard Medical School??? Is he so mentally-challenged that he doesn't realize he can pay his debt off *with* a medical degree? You know, like *most* medical students? I thought he was supposed to be a genius.
