When and how long is the largest vacation period in America?

Me and a few other Australian friends intend on visiting America most likely L.A or N.Y, we're interested to know when the longest holidays are and how long they actually go for related to high school/college students.

Movies give us the impression that spring break lasts 3 months but apparently its only 1 week?

spring break is One week in 99% of school systems.

summer break is 8 - 10 weeks

Summer break for college students can be from mid-May to early-September. For high school and elementary students it is usually from mid-June to early-September.

College students also get about 5 or 6 weeks off in the winter for Christmas and New Years -- usually from mid December to late January. High school and elementary students usually only get like 2 weeks off during this time.

Most students get off the week of Thanksgiving from Wednesday to Sunday. This is sometime in November.

Memorial Day in May and Labor Day in September also offer 3 day weekends for all.

Spring Break is only 1 week. It usually falls in March or April.
