Well actually sell it and buy a new one.

Just 2 months after fixing the fuel system of my (Japanese) car for $700, I've got a major leak in the radiator and the water pump - another $700 bill.
I'm really eager to not foot that bill, and sell it. Working, it'd be worth $3,000-3,500. But now it's barely drivable, of course...

Do I have any cost-effective choice besides fixing it?

either trade it for less than its worth or fix it and sell it outright and maybe make some more money off of it

Not really. You can take a huge lose by selling a broken car or you can fix it up and sell a good running car for top dollar.

I would fix the car and keep on driving it.
