For people in general, all you need is 35mm. For events, you would most likely shoot wide angle to cover as much of what is happening. 35mm is already included in the 18-55mm kit lens and the 18mm end is wide enough for most shooting conditions. You really don't need to buy something else unless you are after speed to which you should look for those focal lengths, 18mm and 35mm, in f/2.0 or lower versions.

get one that fits in your pocket, it is easy to keep track of and they take incredible pictures
Any good lens will do the trick. There seems to be the conception that a certain lens can only be used for certain things - to me that's just not true. So... pick one you like.
I happen to like the 50mm f/1.8. Excellent in low light or actually any kind of light.
