What is a good sports bike to start on?

I've taken a Msf course and passed a while back and got my M licence. Now I'm looking to get a bike of my own. For the majority of the class I was on a Honda Rebel and felt comfortable with it but I want to move onto a sports bike. I've been looking at a 2013 Kawasaki Ninja 650cc because I was told the 600cc range would be good for starters. I don't plan on purchasing the bike until the new year starts (so Jan sometime), meanwhile I would like other opinions. I'm 5"6 and 125lbs

The MSF course is good but by the standards of most Western European Countries it is inferior and insufficient for teaching people to ride full-sized motorcycles. What size Rebel were you riding, the 250 or 450? The Ninja 650 is a solid and sensible bike, but you'd better be quite sure you can handle it.

A 250R, Kawasaki or Honda, will do 95+ mph and out accelerate 95+% of the vehicles on the street. Do you need to ride at 120-160 mph? If so, get a overpowered bloated bike. If you want to easy riding, get a 250.
