As in "someone's drinking the Republican/Democrat Kool-Aid"
To the person who says it mostly refers to the Democrat party; I have heard the expression in reference to both Democrats and Republicans.
I never heard about Jim Jones before. Fascinating yet terrifying.
People of either party can follow their leader blindly. I think it's because people want to believe they voted for the right candidate; so they will be likely to support him on most issues. Lots of Republicans drank the Bush Kool Aid.
