not running for 3 years? I have a 2007 Suzuki GSXR 750 that has not been started since the summer of 2009. I bought it new in 2007 and put 15,000 miles before I quit riding it. From 2009 to 2010 it sat outside under a cover. Since the summer of 2010 it has been in a garage.
What do I need to do to get the bike running again? I know that there is a possibility of corrosion or rust on the piston rings and that the fuel may be all gummed up. What are the safest procedures to ensure that I do not damage the inside of the motor? If you answer please tell me the procedures in the correct order that they should be done. I have the ability to do the work myself with the exception of specific equipment. I only have basic tools and used to work on my own car when I was in high school. I have basic mechanical knowledge but not in-depth knowledge. Thanks in advance for your help and input.

Thanks,
C

first thing.. remove spark plugs & squirt some WD40 or other very thin lubrication into the bores..
leave overnight... then with plugs still out... put the bike in gear.. try for 3RD.. rock the bike back & forth make sure the engine is turning over...

open up the petrol tank & look inside.. if there is rust.. remove tank from bike... & clean it inside..

some petrol & a handful of nuts/ screws rattled around inside will help clean it..

drain old oil & fit new oil & filter..

refit tank.. fit a new fully charged battery.. spin the engine over on the starter for 10 seconds..

put spark-plugs back in... put new fuel in the tank.. squirt a little AERO START or similar starting aid into air filter box.. try to start...

it may take a minute or so to start..

if it then will start with the starting fluid but wont continue to run the Carbies & fuel lines may need cleaning out..

otherwise should be good to ride..

YOU may want to fit new tires if the ones that are on it are a few years old... they go hard & lose grip..
