Were the Portuguese the first to introduce Christianity to African slaves?

I'm doing research on African slaves' religion and was told that Africans first learned of Christianity by the Portuguese BEFORE coming to the New World. I thought that African slaves first learned of Christianity AFTER being taken from their homeland.

Were the Portuguese the 1st to introduce Christianity to African slaves and if so, where can I find the source of that information?

I'm guessing it was the Portuguese by Camões, but now the gov everywhere killed it and wants to oblige people to write differently, as a "unique" way.

The "unique" is Brazil's Portuguese writing type, most just ignore and write how they learned (Camões).
