VZ Navigator on Android Smartphone?

So on my Android Smartphone it has VZ Navigator. I'm wondering if I use VZ Navigator does it use my minutes or my data plan that I have?

I could be wrong but when I was with Verizon they charged 9 dollars a month, Id rather choose the google navigator since its Free.
