Hi

I have a Toyota Corolla 1998 Hatchback 1.6. My problem is that when I am changing from 4th to 5th gear the engine over revs (quite high revs say 70mph is 6000rpm).

It seems to happen mostly when the engine is hot and only in 5th gear.

I still get normal power but the engine is really loud and as i said the car over revs a lot.

Any ideas?

Do not drive the car anymore except gently to a garage to get the clutch changed - it is worn out or oil contaminated and will cease to function completely soon. During the time it is doing 6000 rpm at 70 the clutch plates are slipping by one another fast and wearing themselves out fast too.

You can further test this by going up a steep hill in 3rd gear and accelerating at the same time as dabbing the clutch pedal a little. You will find it does the same as you describe when going from 4th to 5th. If you do this test back off the acelerator as soon as the revs rise to 6000 ish
