Switching phones on Telus contract?

I have a Telus Blackberry, half way through a 3 year contract. Today the phone decided to break, and we have a few choices.
We can obviously either, try and get the phone fixed or pay off the full bill, the device balance, and get a new phone.

But we've been entertaining the idea of an unlocked phone, but unsure how that works with a current contract.

If I purchase an unlocked phone, and put the current sim card in, can we carry on with the current contract as is and continue paying the device balance per month?
Or would I have to swap the phones, and if so would that require us to pay off the remaining device balance at the time of switching?

Anyone who can shed some light to this would be appreciated, I need to have it all done by Friday evening.
