Sun protection/tanning/tan-lines question from outdoors athlete?

I'm a guy and I spend a good part of my day training outside for track and field or going through a light shoot-around on a basketball court. Now that the sun is (finally) out and I am more or less forced into shorts and tank-tops by my activity, I face a few dilemmas:
1) While I appreciate a nice, light tan, spending 2-3 hours outside in the sun is unhealthy for skin - anything apart from sun-lotions?
2) The only way not to get tan lines is not to wear a top - that, however, is not always appropriate. Ideas?
3) Are tan lines actually that bad? I mean, I would like to show off the body since I spend years working on it, but neither do I want to look like a fool with a farmer's tan, nor I want to damage my skin or something.

Looking for ideas, that won't make me look like a moron in the end. I don't need a lecture on skin cancer - I'm just looking for creative solutions
