This morning, Pussy Riot was found guilty of hooliganism and sentenced to two years in prison, for performing a guerilla protest against President Vladimir Putin in Moscow’s main cathedral in March. The verdict highlights a lot of disturbing realities about Putin and Russian politics, including the direct involvement of the Russian Orthodox Church, but it also feels almost unbelievably like a modern-day witch hunt, complete with public punishment of outspoken feminists and their families.
