Newly purchased T-Mobile LG p509 not sending or receiving mms messagse?

I have just purchased a refurbished T-Mobile LG p509 not too long ago. When it came, I put in my MicroSD card as well as my SIM card. It is Android version 2.2. I love the phone, I love the ease of use, minus the fact that I cannot send or receive MMS messages. I do not have a Data plan with T-Mobile, so I am assuming that that is the problem?
This is the same SIM card that I used with my other Nokia Xpress Music which worked fine-- I could send and receive pic messages with that phone without a data plan.
