my nintendo DS lite is not charging?

my nintendo DS lite isn't charging at all, the charge light won't come on and when i turn it on it always has a red light signifying that its run out of power :/ i changed the cover of the nintendo before it deceided to not charge i dont know what i have done to it... any advice??
