Mercury Cougar XR7 Tire Fit. Please Help?!?

I have a mercury cougar xr7 that needs tires.
I know the tire size on it is 215/70r15

What other sizes can fit on it?

Would 215/70r16 fit on it? How do you know?
Can someone help me or explain to me how they work.
I really need this tires and I don't know what other
sizes would fit on it. Thank you for your time and help.

You have to stay within a set of parameters your XR7 is designed for. Going to 16 inch wheels would mean you'd have to stay under 215/70. This is to keep your new tires from striking the frame and fender wells. The up and down and side to side clearances of the car's wheel well. You may get by with 215/60/16 The simplest is to drop the 15 inch tire on the floor and put the new one on top. You should be no greater than an inch greater (on the new 0ne) in any dimension.

Much as my tire dealer recommended I could go 215/70/15 on my Olds. But, 225/70 would cause problems.
