It appears the Toronto Blue Jays will be without Jose Reyes for an extended period of time after the All-Star shortstop was carted off the field with a sprained left ankle during their 8-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

Reyes suffered the injury on an awkward slide into second base on a successful steal attempt. He*got an incredible jump on the play, which unfortunately may have contributed to the injury.*A great throw by Royals catcher Salvador Perez caused Reyes to go into a dangerously late slide that jammed the ankle awkwardly into the bag and with a lot of force.

Reyes immediately grabbed for the ankle and appeared to be in excruciating pain as Toronto's athletic training staff swarmed the field. At one point, Reyes could be seen with tears filling his eyes as the pain and perhaps the reality of the situation set in.

We're still awaiting official word on the extent of Reyes' inury, but the early speculation doesn't sound good. Here's what manager John Gibbons and general manager Alex Anthopoulos had to say courtesy of Sports Net's Tony Ambrogio.

John Gibbons called Reyes injury "nightmare" while Alex A says estimate is out 1 to 3 months depending on MRI results. Reyes going on DL

If the timetable stays on the short side Toronto may be content rolling with Maicer Izturis as their stopgap at short. Should it prove to be a longer term issue, however, there's already word that Anthopoulos will explore minor trades to give the team more options.

For now, though, we just have to wait for the MRI results. The team did not specify on Friday when that MRI would take place, but one would assume it'll be at the soonest possible time. Possibly as early as Saturday.
