Is Volkswagen a middle class or a poor class car in Germany?

Although I don't care about status and I love small, inexpensive cars, would a guy with higher education driving a VW Golf look awkward in Germany?

Would a Mercedes C200 be more "suitable"?

This might sound futile, but I'm trying to understand other countries ways of thinking.

A foreign exchange student I knew used to say that VW were for young adults.. like their VW are like "70 El Caminos or "50 Ford to us. It was "cool" to have one but not sophisticated.
