Is a 1985 Mercedes Benz reliable?

I was thinking of buying a '85 Mercedes, I think 300 series, and I was wondering how reliable it is. My dad says Mercedes are crap and it's gonna break down and it's gonna cost thousands for me to fix, but other people say its super reliable. I'm 16, and it's a 2 door Mercedes with 22' rims, simply irresistible for $3500. How reliable are old Mercedes, in your opinion?

I am sure that it has been very reliable for the last 28 years, And it could remain so , but at 28 years old, it had better be in perfect condition (museum grade) for that kind of money. The fancy 22" rims are a sign that it was noit driven by a sweet old lady to church onch a week.

If you were a 50 year old collector, I would say go for it if you like it, but at 16, you have to have something that is either cheap or reliable and this could be neither.
