Into what format should I convert my video for it to be read by my DVD Player?

My DVD player can read and play videos from flash drives via USB, and it can play most of the AVI-format movies I download.

Now, I recently downloaded an MP4 video, and I tried it with my player but it wouldn't work. So I downloaded a freeware video converter (AVC) and I converted the file into a common AVI video format, yet it still didn't work saying "unsupported format".

Now, I have no idea why my player can't read some AVI-format videos. Does any one of you know the reason why, and possibly how I should convert this MP4 video into a format that takes little space and also be read by my player?

It would really be a great help if you can help me out with this... This problem's been bugging me ever since I discovered I can use a flash disk on my player! Thanks so much in advance.
