This is where my apartment is, this is northwest washington (in bellingham) close to the canadian border. If i use a tripod and put the dish on my balcony can i get directv or is this a waste of time for me?

The satellite your will be pointing at is in the South or Southwest direction?? Do yoy have a clear shot at the DirectTV satellite?

This picture isn't a real help in this case; what you need to do is, stand where the dish will be and look at the sky. From Bellingham, WA, the approximate look angels for DirecTV are Elevation: 30 degrees, Azimuth: 131 degrees (southeast). Do you have a clear view of the sky? No trees or other buildings, etc. If there is nothing in the way, you should be fine. Also, look around at other rooftops and buildings to see if they have dishes. That can also be a clue. DirecTV and Dish Network will come out and check the site for you, too.
