Does the company give you a new one for free, or do they charge you for a new one? we just have the standard receiver.
 
Depends on what the problem is. If it just went out a quit working, then all you have to pay for is a service call. If you did something to break it like drop it or hit it, you will be charged.
 
depends if you subscribe to the DirecTV protection plan- its an extended warranty that covers your equipment (dish, receiver, and even remotes) it covers alot of cost unless its third party caused.
depending on the issue (ie searching for sattelite 771 or not) you may require a service call (which is $49 without the protection plan) but $0 with it. if the reciever physically will not power on, a replacement (without the protection plan) is $19.95 with a new commitment (standard receiver will be 18 months).

DirecTV upgrades for free call them or check on-line. I just got upgraded from a standard Def Tivo to a HD DVR with internet on demand for free.
