How much should I pay for a '95 Jeep Cherokee needing a new transmission?

I found an ad on the web for a 1995 Jeep Cherokee. The details given are as follows:

6 cyl, 4 liter, 4x4
85,000 original miles!!!
Newer tires, new starter and alternator.
Needs transmission & front window has crack (few minor scratches, small dents) - everything else is in great shape.
$2300 OBO.

I emailed the seller asking what kind of stereo system it had. The seller emailed me back saying she didn't know as her son was the one who installed it. He's supposed to be emailing me about it soon, but I've heard nothing so far..

I like the idea of this car (working condition, 85K!!) but I really, really, really don't want to pay that much for the car only to be paying just as much for a new transmission - I'm in college! Right now, I've got $2300 to spend.
How much do ya'll think I should pay?
Any other general advice?
Thanks!!

call and ask the dealer how much the transmission would cost to replace
windshield would be about $250
think transmission would be about $5000
i would offer $500

Nothing. You can get a '98 in decent shape for about that much, a '95 needing a lot of work is worth negative dollars.
