How do I get my computer and iTunes to recognize my iPod?

My computer and iTunes used to recognize my iPod nano now neither does. I have tried restarting my computer, and I have the latest version of iTunes.
I want to try uninstalling iTunes completely and then reinstalling it, I can't get it to uninstall completely from my Mac though. Any thoughts on that?

yea to unistall you have to delete everything and if your computer has control panal then you go there and delete it where it says add and remove
