How do i fix my microphone?

i have a logitech quickcam webcam with built in microphone. but the microphone doesn't seem to work. i've tried changing settings in the control panel and the cam's settings. I made sure that the microphone on the cam was the microphone default on the computer's settings but still nothing i do seems to make a difference.
when i do a test for sound i can see that the bar that displays the sound is moving but afterwards it always says that the computer cannot hear any sound. I know this isn't true because the bar is moving in time with me talking. what can i do to try to solve the problem?
