How do I check the transmission fluid on a 1997 Audi A4 Quattro 2.8L?

My car is making whining noise, mostly when I turn the steering wheel. I was told to check the hydraulic fluid or the transmission fluid, but I don't know how. Any help would be great.

Its a 1997 Audi A4 Quattro 2.8L

try to open the hood....find power steering pump...check fluid level....check belt while you at it
