How can you manage to keep/have a great singing voice even if you smoke cigarettes?

Like Kurt Cobain or Axl Rose, who used to smoke a LOT. Also, how does it affect your voice? Does it change the tone?
Kurt had a wonderful voice, and could sing in different ways and make it sound beautiful. Axl is a great singer, he can reach a reeeeally high pitch, and just sings awesome overall.

no smoking doesn't change your tone. Unprofessional singers will see a difference in their voice after smoking because they don't know how to sing yet. But all smoking really does is dry up your vocal muscles and makes it harder to breath properly.(and damages lungs over time etc)

If a singer, such as Axl Rose or any other professional singer, has proper control over their support, registration, and resonance/tone, then they can sing anything regardless if they are smoking or not smoking.
