How can I update my Ipod touch to iOS system? Wont let me download any games.?

So I have an iPod Touch and at times it may not have been used a lot. My 10 year old uses it now to play games. Only problem now is that when we try to download a new game the iPod says its unable to do so because I have to update to the new version iOS. Ive tried going into settings, but cant find anything where I can do that. Please help.

Second and third generation devices cannot support ios 5 (2nd generation) and 6 (third)... You also need at least iOS 5 in order to update directly from the iPod... If your iPod can handle iOS 5 but you don't have it yet, update through the computer.

go to seetings then general and software update and update your software, good luck
