I'm pretty sure I have the same homework over this, this weekend.(I'm assuming this is for homework) But anyways if gulliver's travels is in your literature book it is full of examples of satire. that is what the story is based on, satire.

There are two distinct ways in which Swift uses satire:

1. The entire story mocks the travel writings that were published in those days. Swift believed that a lot of those writings were hoaxes. By writing 'Gulliver's Travels', which is obviously fiction, he laughs with those travel stories also claiming that he tells the truth.

2. In the text itself he criticizes human society and culture by enlarging certain traits of some people. A lot of the time he personifies certain people in that time with characters in his stories.

The king of the Island of Brobdingnag talks with Gulliver about Europe, guns and canons, which the king doesn't like. It is the perfect opportunity for Swift to criticize certain aspects of European culture. (eg the use of gunpowder, wars,...)
