Fred Wilpon, the owner of the New York Mets, has been in the news a lot in the last year. Mostly, it’s been due to Wilpon’s connection with the Ponzi scheme ran by Bernard Madoff that has him being sued for $1 billion. However, Wilpon found a new way to get in the news — by going on record to bash the team that he owns.
Here are some Fred Wilpon quotes from an article in The New Yorker:
On David Wright: “Really good kid. A very good player. Not a superstar.”
On Jose Reyes, the Mets’ shortstop: “He thinks he’s going to get Carl Crawford money. He’s had everything wrong with him. He won’t get it.”
When talking about Carlos Beltran, Wilpon called himself a schmuck: “We had some schmuck in New York who paid him based on that one series. He’s 65 to 70 percent of what he was.”
On Ike Davis: “Good hitter. Shitty team. Good hitter.”
So Wilpon’s best words were for Davis. Although, even when he was praising him, he ended up comparing the team he owns to feces.
