• Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky has been named the National Hockey League’s First Star for the week ending April 14, the League and club announced today. Toronto Maple Leafs forward Phil Kessel was named the NHL’s Second Star, while Dallas Stars goaltender Richard Bachman is the Third Star selection. [Jackets]
• It appears that Peter Laviolette will return as the Philadelphia Flyers’ head coach next season. As Paul Holmgren told Broad Street Bull: “I think it’s been a difficult year because of the (injury) situation. We haven’t had our whole team all year. I don’t blame the coaches.” [BSB]
• Interesting move in the ESPN power rankings: The Los Angeles Kings are higher than the Anaheim Ducks, Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins. [ESPN]
• Scott Burnside thinks the Craig MacTavish hiring is more of the same for the Edmonton Oilers: “No one knows whether MacTavish has the goods to turn this team around. He acknowledged as much Monday, saying that it doesn’t matter what gets said today but rather the actions that will take place down the road will represent the true test of where this team is headed. But the fact is MacTavish is yet another link to a past whose light continues to shine white hot on the present. Until he produces a winner or at least a team that looks like a team, he will be just another buddy getting a promotion, especially given the number of quality hockey minds toiling in other organizations, such as Paul Fenton, Tom Kurvers, Claude Loiselle, Jim Nill et al. who have more impressive credentials.” [ESPN]
• Um, it’s been a while since the Detroit Red Wings missed the playoffs. Like a “first episode of ‘The Simpsons’ aired” while. [The Farm, via Malik]
• James Neal, Paul Martin and Sidney Crosby return to individual on-ice workouts for the Pittsburgh Penguins, with Crosby wearing a full face shield. [Tribune Review]
• Simon Gagne is the latest player to get an audition in Scott Hartnell’s old spot on Claude Giroux’s wing. [Philly.com]
• Great piece by JP on Adam Oates’ role in the Washington Capitals’ turnaround: “All of this isn't to say that Adam Oates has been perfect. He hasn't been. And there's plenty of work to be done (the team's possession numbers, second-line production, penalty kill and defensive depth are all a bit troubling). But he's overcome a steep learning curve and has a team that was left for dead two months ago on the verge of opening a playoff series at home, with its similarly left-for-dead captain in the conversation for League MVP. It's impressive. And even if the Caps fall short of the post-season, this season will not have been without its successes, among them comfort in the fact that the Caps have things headed in the right direction, with the right man behind the bench.” [Japers’ Rink]
