Do yellow bell peppers turn red during the ripening process? ?

I bought a yellow bell pepper plant that may actually be a red pepper plant. It has a big, beautiful pepper that turned red instead of yellow, though. I want to know if that's normal so I don't let it rot while waiting for it to turn yellow. Thanks in advance.
