Demonoid or torrents in general, how do you get caught downloading?

How do people get caught downloading from torrents? I've downloaded about 8 gb of movies so far. I also don't upload or seed. So how big of trouble would I get in if I get caught, and how do I prevent myself from getting caught? Can I download from public wifi spots?
I plan on downloading something that is 8 gigs.

OK I may be wrong but...
If a copyright holder finds their content on a torrent site, they can download it and then seed it themselves. Then they get the ip address of anyone connecting to download.

i made a video on this.

1. bittorent set your connection to forced.

2. download peer block.

3. you need to upload otherwise your a burden on the rest of the system.

4. if your caught they just email you a warning.
