Either the series really doesn't come off as something the target audience would watch, be it an age or gender demographic, or it's a show that has actually attracted almost nothing but the opposite of the target audience.
Examples:
*Popular with boys: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Princess Tutu, Powerpuff Girls.
*Shounen anime/manga with mostly female fans: Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro, Gensoumaden Saiyuki, Black Butler.
*Kids shows with large adult fan-followings: Gargoyles, X-Men, Batman TAS, Ren & Stimpy.
