what I mean is, I'm confused. I have ps3 as my blueray player and I have a 32' Emerson hdtv. I also have an hdmi cable so my tv can go up to 720p or 1080i resolution. I borrowed a blueray movie from a friend to test out the picture quality and its not really that great. like on dark scenes it looks grainy, but on brighter and light scenes it looks great.
on the back of the blueray cases it says 1080p. does that mean I need a 1080p tv to see blueray? i use the 720p option and I wanted to buy the dark Knight movie but that movie has a lot of night scenes, which might look grainy on mu tv. is there any way to fix this, would 1080i work?

Thats because your TV sucks.
You need a 1080p TV to watch a blu-ray in 1080p, and yes blu-rays can watched at 720p or 1080i.
I dont know what looks better on your tv, 720p or 1080i, try it and see.
The picture looks bad because your tv likely has a low contrast ratio and not very good picture quality.

You may need to adjust the brightness on your TV so that it does not crash blacks. However, your TV may simply not be good enough (it may have low contrast).
