Can I register Samsung Galaxy S2 for warranty without the receipt?

I'm thinking of buying the Galaxy S2 off someone tomorrow but they don't have the receipt. They got the phone as an upgrade and it was sent to their house. It hasn't been used and all the accessories are included. So I'm wondering, would I still be able to get a warranty on the phone? I would have thought Samsung would need a receipt for proof and date of purchase to set the warranty period. But I have read that sometimes all the manufacturer needs are the IMEI number or the serial number which can be found under the battery on the phone which would tell them when the phone was manufactured? Thanks if anyone can help me on this.
