Can I modify my smartphone's camera by installing a better one in it?

I have a Nexus S, and I'm just curious whether, if I ordered a new CMOS sensor that happened to have the same dimensions but a higher resolution, I could just open up my phone and solder it in place of the old one... or would there be software/electrical issues with doing so?

theoretically yes but the joints in the circuits are tiny and fragile unless you are very skilled you would fail, also the firmware might need updating which would be difficult unless a similar camera/phone combination exists
