I want to download something like Cabos but Limewire screwed up my friend's computer, and I don't want to happen to my birthday present. I know that any file sharing thing will be dangerous, but how dangerous is Cabos?

I dont know much about it but if its a sharing site, you will have chances of viruses.

Cabos should be safe, however, it is illegal. The biggest factor is the human factor. People who put files on there can put viruses in their files. You should always take the proper precautions. I would not use it if I were you.

The danger in file-sharing is not necessarily the act of downloading the files themselves. But the act of opening the files you download. Any time you open a port through your firewall you are exposing your computer to threats, but for the most part it is harmless. The same rule applies here.

Honestly I would not use a tool like limewire or the variant of limeire Cabos.( Cabos is based from limewires source code) Because it opens your computer a list of other attacks that you really don't need to be exposed to. I personally use a torrenting program called Utorrent. http://www.utorrent.com to get all the files I need

Never run the file you have downloaded before you have scanned the file or entire archive. You can use http://www.virustotal.com/ to check quickly.

But to keep your computer safe I highly recommend using NOD32 or Kaspersky anti-virus programs because they are the best anti-virus software there is.(Aside from sand-boxing software like defense shield)
