The temperature on the thermostat in my house is set for 75 degrees...but is not dropping below 78 degrees. It is only 82 degrees outside, and my central AC had worked like a charm until recently.

This morning when I first noticed the problem, it was 90 outside and 80 inside. I noticed that the outdoor unit was not running (not even humming). My handyman friend came over and we found that the contactor on the outdoor unit was not working. We replaced that...outdoor unit started blowing hot air...we thought we were golden.
Wrong.
Temp in the house did not drop below 80 :-( Air temp in the vents was 70. Friend came back over and started charging the system with Freon. Air temp in the vents dropped to 62 (***which was 18 degrees below the ambient temp in the house. Google told us that 18 degrees differential was the goal, so we assumed we were golden again).
Wrong.
It has now been two hours - house temp is 78.
Vent temp is 60.
Thermostat still set at 75.
The blower on the furnace is functioning.
The air filter is brand new.

Is it possible that the system just needs more freon??
I assume this would not be an issue, but could the thermostat be somehow sabotaging the system? (it is definitely running)

I appreciate any help - as you can imagine, this is very frustrating.
