5.1 surround sound home theater to laptop/cable hdmi?

I'm confused with how surround sound works..

i want to buy this a samsung all in one home theater system.. 5.1.

i normally dont watch movies on my bluray (mostly download through internet on my laptop shhssh) then connect my laptop to tv..

i'm not sure if i do the same thing will the surround sound work when playing my movies on laptop through hdmi tv? same goes for cable.. will the cable work on my surround sound

Yes and yes, however you must use a digital audio connection (HDMI, S/pdif coax, S/pdif Toslink optical) and the surround format must be supported.
