Dana Vollmer of the United States celebrates after she won gold in the Women’s 100m Butterfly final during Day Ten of the 14th FINA World Championships at the Oriental Sports Center on July 25, 2011 in Shanghai, China. (Getty) The Rio Olympics are now in full swing, and so is the television coverage. After surprise medals and shocking eliminations, the U.S. finds itself in a three-way tie for the top of the medal table*at five.
What about today’s events? There are plenty to choose from on this second full day of the Rio Olympic Games.
What should I be watching?
Morning slots:
NBCSN coverage starts bright and early at 9 a.m. ET with beach volleyball and women’s archery. *If those sports don’t catch your eye, you can wait until 10 a.m. ET when NBC will start its coverage with qualifying heats of rowing, women’s beach volleyball and women’s road race cycling.
Americans Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Sweat will be featured in the women’s beach volleyball portion of NBC’s morning coverage. Meanwhile, cyclist Megan Guarnier will be looking to make a return trip to the podium after earning a bronze medal in the women’s road race in 2012.
Rounding out the morning coverage and leading*into the afternoon will be the United States women’s basketball team, which will be opening its Olympic campaign against Senegal at 11 a.m. ET on NBCSN. The team will be looking to win its sixth consecutive gold medal in Rio.
Afternoon slots:
On MSNBC at noon ET, if you like swords and parrys, take a stab at watching men’s foil fencing, which will also be available on phones, tablets and computers. *If national flavor is something you’re looking for, the United States women will be taking on Australia in Rugby on the USA network at noon ET.
Also on in the afternoon are two promising-looking volleyball matches set to be played on two different surfaces. At 3 p.m. on NBC, Americans Phil Dalhausser and Nicolas Lucena come into the tournament as the No. 2 ranked team in the world. Dalhausser, a gold medalist in 2008 with ex-partner Todd Rogers, is looking to medal in 2016 after being left off the podium in 2012.

The indoor game takes over the airwaves on NBC at 4:15 p.m. ET. *After winning the World Cup in 2015, The United States men are in a great position to medal and improve upon their quarterfinal elimination in the 2012 London Games.
Primetime slots:
At 7 p.m. ET, NBC primetime Olympic coverage is jammed with Americans competing in the pool and the gymnastics arena. World record-holder Katie Ledecky hits the pool for her first individual event, the 400-meter freestyle. Dana Vollmer is also in the pool tonight looking to defend her 2012 gold medal in the 100-meter butterfly.
In gymnastics, the heralded women’s team hits the floor for the team competition where it’s expected to win the gold medal. Team USA is headed up by three-time world champion Simone Biles and the defending all-around gold medalist Gabby Douglas.
You might also*switch over to NBCSN at 11 p.m. ET for some hand-to-hand combat as people toss each other around in the medal round of Judo. *Elimination rounds of boxing will also be taking place to cap off day two of the Rio Olympic Games.
