1999 Volkswagen Jetta, what are some common problems?

Hi, someone would like to trade a 1999 Volkswagen Jetta for my truck I have.
It has 167,000 miles but my truck is older as well so I know its an even trade...but wondering what tends to go wrong with these cars in general.
The seller said it sometimes doesn't turn on right away..sometimes you have to press the unlock and lock button on the key and it works for some reason they said... sounds electrical?
also has a leak in the oil pan..but thats no big deal to me.
I am trading for my 82 chevy k10 with a 4" lift, if we both end up liking the vehicles.

the lock unlock button is a anti-theft. btw i think it's 97-99 if it has an after market radio most shops won't hook a scan tool up to it if it needs to be fixed.
