A mormon family I know store a year's worth of food in their house, just in case...? Why do they do this and is this a Mormon thing or something else?

The Mormons are very good at handling disasters, not just for themselves but for others. Give credit where credit is due. Look at all the good they did with helping out after Katrina etc.

Yes. The Prophets of the Mormon Church have advised it for years. It's for in the case of disasters, they have enough food to feed themselves and neighbors, Mormon or not. Many people think it's because we're afraid of the tribulations before the Second Coming, but that's not really the case. Just so we can be helpful neighbors:)

I know of some survivalists that do that, but as far as I know, none of the Mormons I know are that paranoid. I suppose they might have, but if so, I don't know about it. Try to understand that you can't judge an entire religion based on what you know about a single family.
