Why won't my PC accept my DVD+R discs when I try to burn a film?

I have managed to download my film, I have DVD+R discs with 4.7GB memory. The film is currently in the AVI format and when I try to burn on either Media Player or Nero it doesn't accept my discs. What am I doing wrong?
Ken - I've tried with both + and - discs, where can i find out what DVD drive I have? Sorry I am new to all this! (it does say DVD on the draw and I have been able to burn music discs)

Some older DVD drives were not multi standard and only accept DVD-R. Look at the spec of your writer.

Your DVD drive might not be able to burn DVD-R or DVD-RW.
Could you specify what DVD drive you have?

To put your film on dvd you need to encode the avi file to dvd format.

I use convertx to dvd which is good. ithink they may give a trial period.

You could burn the avi file to cd but it would only play on PC or the very latest dvd player with avi support.
