Is this a good way for a teenager to lose weight?

I've been overweight since I started eating for comfort. A quick fix all the time. i've tried exercising but I always turn to 'naughty' foods again and again. I can't get fit again like I used to be. I'm 16 years old.
I signed up to a gym with my mum but it takes me 1 1/2 hours to get there on foot and 2 buses. My mum says she'll take me but never does. If I walk/jog for an hour each day and limit my food intake (I'm a lacto-ovo-vegetarian and usally eat healthy unless I have a so called 'break down') will I lose weight quickly? How much/what exercise should I do each and every day? And yes I can stick to it!
