How do you pick up a sound on Rockband or GHWT with the mic?

I heard that u should put a fan in front of your t.v. or something like that?
Can u explain it better for me? I've tried putting it up to the speakers but it just screeches.

Every time I put it in front of the speakers it either screeches or it doesn't even hit the right note.

Put in front of the TV speakers that's what I do.
