Is it ok to put unleaded gas in a VW GTI?

I was seriously considering buying an earlier model (90s) of the VW GTI. However after hearing that they are supposed to take performance grade gas, im having second thoughts. Is this true that they need high performance? Will it damage the engine to use unleaded or will it just run better on high performance gas?

all gas is unleaded now it just has different chemicals in it to make it a higher octane,so that will be all you will be able to buy for it,i would use higher octane though if the owners manual cal so for it,you can try 8 octane because most cars built since the 90,s will run good off it,if it dont, go to a higher octane rating like 98 or 91 octane,87 wont hurt it though,good luck.
